Individual Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

Psychodynamic psychotherapy, a form of psychological or talk therapy, focuses on an individual’s unconscious processes as they are manifested in the individual’s present behaviors. The ultimate goals of treatment are individual self-awareness in the individual and gaining an understanding of the influence of the past on present behavior.

By exploring an individual’s emotions, thoughts, early life experiences, and beliefs, the provider and individual can work to identify recurrent patterns in behavior and other often maladaptive defense mechanisms. Insight into these patterns may allow the individual to begin addressing those patterns and ultimately changing them.

A core part of psychodynamic psychotherapy is encouraging the individual to speak freely about their emotions, desires, and fears. This includes accessing and discussing feelings the individual may have towards the provider in session. This in turn can demonstrate how a person interacts with their friends and loved ones, and may help show how early-life relationships affect an individual today.

Success in psychotherapy is variable and dependent on many factors, including the strength of the therapeutic relationship between the provider and individual, an individual’s capacity for introspection and psychological mindedness, and an individual’s motivation. The process can at times bring about unpleasant memories and feelings. These unpleasant sensations are best dealt with when brought up in session to be discussed between the individual and the provider.
